The Information and Communication revolution has brought enormous changes in the way we organize our lives, our economies, industries and institutions. These spectacular developments in modern times have undoubtedly enhanced the quality of our lives, but at the same time, have led to manifold problems including the problem of massive amount of hazardous waste and other waste generated from electric products. Such waste poses a serious threat to human health and environment. Rapid product innovation and replacement, plus economies of scale that have driven down prices means that there is burgeoning global demand for ICTs. End-of-life electronic equipment forms part of an exponentially-growing pile of global e-waste and with approximately 1.5 billion PCs in use worldwide, we have a significant waste challenge to meet.

Numerous attempts are under way to stem the rising e-waste tide. While the specifics of each country’s approach differ, in the main all aim to increase the separate collection of e-waste and its recovery by reuse and recycling. However, of these two options, recycling is often the default end-of-life response. Reuse of functional equipment is the environmentally superior recovery option – especially considering the additional socio-economic benefits it reaps–and should be promoted as such in any waste management program. The lower purchase cost of refurbished equipment can make it available to those that could not afford it new, and can contribute to achieving economic and social development goals.

Like hazardous waste, the problem of e-waste has become an immediate and long-term concern as its unregulated accumulation and recycling can lead to major environmental problems endangering human health. This calls for an urgent need for E-Waste Management so as to preserve the ecological balance and reduce landfills. Recycling end-of-life products is vital if we are to save resources and minimize waste.
